KAOROCK Research and Case Studies

Comparison of Two Metakaolins and a Silica Fume Used as Supplementary Cementitious Materials

Metakaolin has been studied as a replacement to silica fume in high performance concrete applications. Thiele Kaolin recently contracted with the Civil Engineering Department of Georgia Tech to research the benefits of metakaolin compared to silica fume. Both wet and dry properties were studied.

Application Note 1 (Click on link below for pdf document)
Increases in Compressive Strength of Split-Face Block

Highlights:
1. Using minimal amounts of Kaorock allowed the manufacturer to split the blocks after 24 hours versus 48 hours without using Kaorock
2. Using Kaorock resulted in an increase of over 17% in compressive strength
3. The added early strength resulted in better splits with less rejects

Application Note 2 (Click on link below for pdf document)
Economic Study of Concrete Mixes in Relation to Compressive Strength

Highlights:
1. An increase of about 60% in the cost of a concrete mix resulted in an increase of 71% in strength
2. Increasing fly ash content beyond 15% was found not to be cost-effective
3. Increasing the metakaolin content beyond 5% was found not to be cost-effective
